Paul Hindemith was one of the creators who considered music as an everyday duty, but also the biggest of pleasures. In the first half of the XX century he brought into being the idea of Gebrauchmusik which intended to remove the gap between contemporary creator and an unprofessional spectator. The composer wanted to stimulate the activity of amateur listeners through engaging them in the performance. The Wir bauen eine Stadt (1930) has this character. It is a composition that encourages building of a global village understood as a world-rebuilding movement after the trauma of the First World War. Hindemith explained that this composition is supposed to be an exercise-amusement for children, but also quite an entertainment for adults. A sketch-like character of this composition gives the possibility of engaging different numbers of children in it and the music conversation is often improvised.
